Not all engagements must be executed in person by a consultant. In fact, some assessments are more efficient and cost effective when done virtually. Virtual engagement elements can be more time flexible for participants, it supports better time management of the engagement processes, it can help to better support confidentiality and anonymity for employees when engaging with consultants. It also supports the reduction of ancillary expenses (e.g., travel, meals, etc.).
Virtual engagements make sense when the focus is on having either individual or group meeting sessions that do not require shadowing or process/procedural review activities.
Not all clarity of conditions can be garnered through conversation, in some instances observation is necessary to get a full understanding of the conditions. There may be times when review of processes, procedures, tools and resources are necessary. Monitoring team and cultural dynamics are best accomplished through physical engagements. Physical engagement efforts can be more costly than virtual efforts on the frontend. However, when done properly, both efforts more than pay for themselves through helping to foster healthier working environments that are more harmonious, productive, and proficient.
Physical engagements make sense if you are facing a crisis or eminent change requirement. Trying to determine a better way of a work approach, dealing with process and procedural challenges, addressing team dynamic issues, looking to realign.
Short answer, yes! One-on-one and team meetings can be done virtually, as can mentoring and guidance training efforts. While measurement and observation activities are most effectively executed in person. However, technology today allows for observations to be done via cell phones and computers using various apps and platforms.
Clarity of needs will drive the most efficient and effective approach recommendations.
